DAMU

The Theater Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts (DAMU) in Prague is part of the largest arts university in the Czech Republic and focuses on educating artistic personalities who combine theatrical knowledge with the courage to experiment creatively. This selective school offers studies in all theater disciplines, including drama, alternative theater, and puppet theater, under the guidance of prominent Czech and foreign personalities. Studies are offered at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels, with the possibility of internships abroad. DAMU graduates find employment in leading theaters in the Czech Republic, independent groups, and other artistic, educational, managerial, and production professions.

The newly accredited follow-up master's program Lighting and Audiovisual Design for the Live Arts (LAD-LA) responds to the interconnection of space, technology, dramaturgy, and direction. Inspired by international trends, this program is the first in the Czech Republic to integrate the teaching of lighting, sound, projection, and exhibition design in a strictly undivided cooperation. At DAMU, LAD-LA creates space for experimentation with new media and technologies in collaboration with other disciplines. LAD-LA deals with design for the performing arts in the broadest sense of the word: students learn the principles of design, creation, and project implementation, which will enable them to enter both traditional roles in the performing arts and the broader field that includes audiovisual production, immersive experiences, exhibition design, and event design. The program is inspired in particular by new study programs at Rose Bruford College, Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, and UniArts Helsinki, both in terms of curriculum content and the modular nature of teaching.

The new study program is taught in the unique premises of Galaxie, which has been adapted and equipped for the needs of a field that essentially combines art and contemporary technologies. Teaching is carried out by experts from the Czech Republic and abroad, including, for example, the guarantor of the study program, composer and music teacher Prof. Vratislav Šrámek, and lighting designer and teacher Pavla Beranová. The teaching team also includes the head of the scenography department, Prof. Jan Štěpánek; visual artists Dan Gregor and František Pecháček; puppeteer, animator, and musical experimenter Tomáš Procházka; director Jan Frič; and the technical director of the New Stage of the National Theater, sound engineer, and teacher at the Czech Technical University and DISK, Jan Veselý.
