Dejvice Theatre

At the start of its 34^th season, the Dejvice Theatre finds itself on the threshold of a new and exciting phase. Due to the planned renovation of the home stage on Zelená Street, it was necessary to find a replacement space where it could continue its artistic endeavours and which would correspond to its vision and requirements. After a thorough search and a fortunate coincidence, the choice fell on the empty halls of the former Galaxie multiplex cinema in the Prague district of Jižní Město – Háje. This new address is not just a temporary change of location, but also the beginning of an ambitious multicultural project. In its new space, the theatre has the opportunity not only to carry on with its work, but also to open itself up to new creative challenges. Not only have all the productions from the main stage repertoire been moved here, but during the upcoming 2025/2026 season, two unique production projects will be created here that will definitely take advantage of Galaxie’s specific environment. 

For the Dejvice Theatre, Galaxie is an opportunity to reach a completely different type of audience and to collaborate with new artists. After this ‘galactic year,’ the ensemble will return home to Dejvice – most certainly enriched by this valuable experience and also with the feeling that it has contributed to the revival of a space, temporarily turning it into an important spot on Prague's cultural map.

Sharing a place with artists from the fields of dance, puppet theatre and visual arts promises new impulses from other genres and the opportunity to observe someone completely different at work – but also the possibility to inspire others in return. The larger capacity of the auditorium will enable the theatre to satisfy high audience demand. However, at the same time, the change of venue also signals that in a positive sense the Dejvice Theatre is not afraid to shake up its iconic 'address' – that ‘Dejvice’ does not actually merely refer to the location, but rather to the ensemble’s intense, exclusive interplay of acting performances or its continuous exploration of new themes.

"We are coming to Háje to see what it exactly means to have a theatre in Dejvice. We will have at least two premieres at Galaxie. I will take care of the autumn one. It will be based on collective authorship and will apply documentary theatre techniques (the working title is Facka – The Slap). The second premiere, in the spring, will be directed by Irish director Wayne Jordan, who will work with Dejvice Theatre actors to create a theatrical collage based on Marivaux’s texts.” Jiří Havelka, Artistic director of Dejvice Theatre
