Minor Theatre
Minor is one of the largest theatres for children and young audiences in the Czech Republic. Since its founding in 1950 (originally under the name Central Puppet Theatre), Minor has consistently demonstrated that children's theatre is by no means an inferior genre that parents merely endure for the sake of their kids. On the contrary, it proves that education and entertainment don’t have to be mutually exclusive. Minor is a respected artistic institution in the field of contemporary theatre, known for its innovative approaches, use of modern technologies, and engagement with current social issues.
Our theatre is located in the heart of Prague and, in addition to two performance halls, the building also houses an interactive gallery, a shop focused on children’s books and toys, and a dedicated space for workshops and educational programs. During the spring and summer, we regularly organize various types of outdoor games and activities around Prague and its surroundings.
Children grow quickly – and so do their interests. To keep our audience engaged from toddlerhood through adolescence, we offer a diverse and genre-rich repertoire. In addition to drama, musicals, puppet and movement theatre, we also stage multimedia projects, new circus, and live music performances featuring our in-house band. As mentioned above, our productions often incorporate technology and address socially relevant topics. For example, It Was a Joke! deals with bullying, I'm Fine… explores children's social isolation, and Hamlet Junior examines divorce from both a child’s and a parent’s perspective. Technological highlights include live cinema in Snow White is not dead and Don’t Be Afraid, Red Riding Hood!
We also enjoy working with historical topics, which we present to children in accessible and engaging ways—often through central characters they can relate to. We are not afraid to tackle difficult themes such as communist totalitarianism in Hunt for Jednorožec, World War II in The Black Partisan, the Hussite wars in The Story of Lipany, or Czech puppeteers and legionnaires in The Hopeful Brothers. Our production Zá-to-pek! tells the story of the legendary Czech athlete Emil Zátopek. All these acclaimed shows were directed by Janek Jirků, who has served as Minor’s artistic director since 2024.
For our new venue, Galaxie, we are preparing three programming lines: newly created productions developed specifically for the Galaxie space, existing shows that can be technically adapted to perform on both stages, and successful productions previously retired due to capacity constraints.
In addition to theatre, we place strong emphasis on creative and educational programming. Morning shows are often followed by interactive educational workshops for school groups that expand on the themes of the performance. On weekends, we host various artistic workshops such as film animation, photography techniques, and music or dance sessions. We also organize outdoor games that bring Prague's history and architecture to life in a playful way. During the pandemic, we launched our own VOD platform – TV Minor – which features short animated films by students and graduates of art schools from both the Czech Republic and abroad.
And in case you're wondering whether we're exaggerating about being a respected artistic institution, here are some awards to back it up: The Hopeful Brothers (Thalia Award 2022 for Gustav Hašek, plus several other nominations and four awards at the Skupova Plzeň Festival), Zá-to-pek! (Thalia Award 2020 for Ondřej Nosálek), Long, Broad and Sharpsight (2023 Thalia Award longlist for Antonia Formanová), Nanook (two awards at the Mateřinka Festival 2021), Mom, Are We There Yet? (Plzeň City Award for Lenka Volfová and Jiří Jelínek), Land of Sounds (Theatre Critics’ Awards for Marek Doubrava), and many more.
